What Is the Oil Pan and Gasket??
The oil pan sits at the bottom of your engine. It works like a container that holds all the engine oil. As your engine runs, the oil moves through the engine to keep everything slippery and cool. When the oil is done moving through the engine, it drains back into the oil pan until it’s needed again.
Because the oil pan sits so low, it can get hit by rocks, road debris, or potholes. Over time, it can get dented or even cracked. If this happens, oil can start to leak out.
The oil pan gasket is a seal that sits between the oil pan and the engine. Its job is to keep oil from leaking out around the edges. Heat from the engine and old age can cause the gasket to dry out or break. When that happens, you may start to see oil dripping under your car or notice a burning smell while driving.
How Problems Start
Oil pan and gasket problems usually start small. A tiny dent or a small crack can slowly lead to bigger leaks. A worn-out gasket may only seep a little oil at first, but the leak will grow over time. If bolts loosen or were tightened too much during a past repair, the seal can weaken and allow oil to escape. Some common signs include oil spots on the ground, a burning oil smell, smoke from under the hood, or needing to add oil more often. In more serious cases, your dashboard might show a low oil warning light.
